Brownie activities designed around the Try It's Book
Dinosaur World (Cave City, KY)
Brownie Girl Scout Activities

Dinosaur World, off I-65 at the Cave City exit, has program opportunities for Brownie Girl Scouts designed around Try-It requirements. The instructions for participating are below:

1) The program activities can be done by troops or individuals.
2) Girls must be registered as Brownie Girl Scouts in order to work on Try-It requirements.
3) Activities must be arranged in advance. Contact Nicole Randall, Monday through Friday at Dinosaur World, 270-773-4345, to make a reservation for your troop’s trip and activities, or e-mail dinosaurworld@scrtc.com for information.
4) Activities can be completed in any order and at any pace. Do as much or as little as you like.
5) While many of the activities can be done without charge, there is a per-person admission fee to the park.
6) Dinosaur World will provide the space and tables and chairs to work on these activities. Girl Scout groups will need to bring all materials necessary to complete the activity except for what Dinosaur World specifies they will provide.

Puppets, Dolls and Plays
1) Finger Puppets – page 72 Try-It’s Book
a. You can easily do this activity at Dinosaur World. Simply make your fingers dinosaurs instead of people. Use scraps of cloth and felt to make your dinosaurs.
i. Dinosaur World can provide some small “model dinosaurs” to help with ideas.
ii. Dinosaur World can provide several children’s books with dinosaur stories for the girls to act out the book.
2) Paper Bag Puppet – page 74 Try-It’s Book
a. Dinosaur Paper Bag puppets can be made using the same materials.
i. Dinosaur World can provide some small “model dinosaurs” to help with ideas.
3) Puppet Stage – page 75 Try-It’s Book
a. Bring materials from home for your stage. Make your puppets at Dinosaur World using finger puppets or paper bag puppets or a mixture of both.
b. Act out your own dinosaur story or use one of our children’s books to re-create a story.
c. Take our Dinosaur Walk and have each girl choose a dinosaur to make. Have them learn at least one thing about their dinosaur and incorporate that into the puppet stage story.

Stitch It Together
1) Animal Sewing Card – page 76 Try-It’s Book
a. Let Dinosaur World know before you arrive that you would like to do this activity and they will provide a large picture of a dinosaur for the card. The Girl Scouts can then continue with the activity using a dinosaur instead of another animal.
b. Girls will be able to learn about their chosen dinosaur during the Dinosaur Walk.
2) Button Collage – page 76 Try-It’s Book
a. Let Dinosaur World know before you arrive that you would like to do this activity and they will provide a large picture of a dinosaur. The girls can then trace their dinosaur on felt or fabric. Girls can sew on buttons to make “spots” or other decorations.
3) A Real Page Turner – page 77 Try-It’s Book
a. After the Girl Scouts make their book they can fill the pages with a drawing and a fact about the dinosaurs they learned about on their trip. They can also decorate the front of their book with dinosaurs.
4) Patch It All Together – page 79 Try-It’s Book
a. Before you come, purchase different fabric with dinosaur print on it. At Dinosaur World, the girls can make their quilt using the dinosaur material. They can then put their squares together to make an entire dinosaur quilt.
b. Before the girls turn in their squares, they can tell something about a dinosaur they learned about while on the dinosaur walk.
c. The leader can then help the girls talk about how the dinosaurs all interacted with each other. Symbolize it by putting all the squares together to make one big quilt.

Eco-Explorer
1) Exploring Nature – page 102 Try-It’s Book
a. This activity will be easy to do at Dinosaur World since it is an outdoor park.
b. This activity can go further at the Fossil Dig where our guide can explain that fossils were once living things that have become fossilized. The girls will get to take home some of the fossils they find. Please let Dinosaur World know you want to do this activity before you come.
2) What’s a Habitat – page 103 Try-It’s Book
a. Do the activity at Dinosaur World before you go on the Dinosaur Walk. The leader can explain what habitat each of the dinosaurs lived in by reading the signs. Discuss what each dinosaur ate.
3) Make a Habitat – page 103 Try-It’s Book
a. Have each of the girls select a dinosaur on the Dinosaur Walk and then make a proper habitat for it based on what they learned by reading the sign.
4) Food Chain – page 104 Try-It’s Book
a. Make a dinosaur food chain using the outline provided. Information on what the dinosaurs ate will be on the signs on the dinosaur walk.
i. For example: trees – brontosaurus – Tyranosaurus
5) Speak Up For Animals – page 105 Try-It’s Book
a. Do this activity as listed either during your Dinosaur World trip or prior to the trip then incorporate Dinosaurs and how they are now extinct. Dinosaur World is all about animals that are not longer with us. The Prehistoric Museum at Dinosaur World has exhibits about theories of how the dinosaurs disappeared. Also, at the fossil dig, the Dinosaur World guide will explain how fossils were once living things. Please let Dinosaur World know you would like to do this activity prior to arrival.
6) Helping Wildlife – page 105 Try-It’s Book
a. Girl Scouts can make one bird feeder during their Dinosaur World trip as a troop effort to place at Dinosaur World. Please inform the Marketing Director that you would like to do this activity.

Watching Wildlife

a. Pick two dinosaurs on our Dinosaur Walk and make a grocery list of what that animal might need.

Careers
1) A Career For You – page 13 Girl Scout Badges Book
a. Find out what a paleontologist is before your visit to Dinosaur World.
b. Define the difference between a paleontologist and archeologist. Pick which one you would want to be and why.
c. At Dinosaur World you will get a taste of what a paleontologist does. In the museum you will see a paleontologist field site exhibit. At the Fossil Dig you will get a chance to be a paleontologist. You will also see life-sized re-creations of what a paleontologist studies.
2) Thinking On Your Feet – page 13 Girl Scout Badges Book
a. Study the paleontology career before you visit Dinosaur World. Give a 5-minute talk to your troop about paleontology at Dinosaur World. On small slips of paper, write different words dealing with paleontology and put them in a box or bag. Each of the troop members can draw out one of the slips and tell how that word relates to paleontology. You’ll be able to see how well you explained and how well they listened. If you’re working together as a troop, prepare this activity to do with another group of Girl Scouts.
3) Time’s A Wasting – page 13 Girl Scout Badges Book
a. A big part of making sure the public is happy at Dinosaur World is properly preparing groups’ schedules so their time runs smoothly and the groups do not interfere with the general public. Tell the Marketing Director before you visit that you would like to make the schedule for your group during your day at Dinosaur World. She will see how well you did!

a. The Marketing Director of Dinosaur World can do a short speech on how she chose her career and how she got to where she is now. Please make arrangements in advance with the Marketing Director to make sure she is available for your group.

a. Dinosaur World has a park map. Look at the park map and decide how you would change it to make the map easier to read.
b. The dinosaurs are where they are on the Dinosaur Walk for a reason. See if you can find out why employees placed the dinosaurs the way they are. Would you place them differently?
2) Sing Someone’s Praises – page 51 Girl Scout Badge Book
a. Create a story, song or poem about one of the dinosaurs on our Dinosaur Walk. In your creation, explain how it had a major impact on the other dinosaurs.

a. Before your trip to Dinosaur World, study what the world looked like when the dinosaurs lived. Learn how the world has changed since then. Give a short presentation to your troop at Dinosaur World about what you learned.

a. At Dinosaur World’s Fossil Dig learn about the difference between a rock and a fossil. The guide will explain the difference. How does a fossil form? Find out the difference between a paleontologist and a geologist. Let Dinosaur World know you want to do this activity prior to your arrival.
2) Geo Careers – page 199 Girl Scout Badges Book
a. Learn about a paleontologist. At the museum you will see a paleontologist field work exhibit. At the fossil dig you can be a paleontologist and learn about different types of fossils.
i. To make this activity more challenging, study fossils before you arrive. Then at the fossil dig, see if you can identify what you find. Let Dinosaur World know you want to do this activity and they can give you a list of fossils in the dig.

a. Dinosaur World has thousands of fossils, casts and impressions. Bring the materials to make your own impressions. See the wide variety of fossils at Dinosaur World and dig for your own fossils at our Fossil Dig.
i. To make this activity more challenging, study fossils before you arrive then at the fossil dig see if you can identify what you find. Let Dinosaur World know you want to do this activity and they can give you a list of fossils in the dig.

Science In Everyday Life
1) Science Fiction – page 206 Girl Scout Badges Book
a. If you do not know about something, sometimes you “guess.” If a scientist does not really know something, sometimes they guess as well. However, when a scientist guesses it is called “creating a theory.” There are lots of theories about what happened to the dinosaurs. Research some of these theories prior to your trip to Dinosaur World.
b. Write a short story pretending you are a dinosaur. Tell about your dinosaur life while you are alive and guess about what your life will be like in 5, 10, or 20 years.
2) How Much Time? – page 207 Girl

a. When you first arrive at Dinosaur World, set up an early time-keeping tool such as a
sundial. Periodically check back to your tool and record the time.

Let’s Have A Party Help with a home or den party. (Dinosaur World has birthday party packages so this activity can be completed at Dinosaur World).
Be An Artist (Dinosaur World is an outdoor museum. These activities can be completed while at the park with a dinosaur theme.)
1) Make a freehand sketch of a person place, or thing. 2) Tell a story in three steps by drawing three cartoons. 3) Help draw, paint, or color some scenery for a skit, play, or puppet show.
Outdoor Adventure 1) Help plan and hold a picnic with your family or den. Sharing Your World With Wildlife 1) Build or make a bird feeder or birdhouse and hang it in a place where birds can visit safely. (With pre-arrangement from Dinosaur World. A bird feeder can be made at the park and displayed here at well). 2) Name one animal that has become extinct in the last 100 years. Tell why animals become extinct. Name one animal that is on the endangered species list. (Since Dinosaur World is an outdoor dinosaur museum, this is the ideal location for this activity.)
Family Fun Go on a day trip or evening out with members of your family. (Dinosaur World will host your family outing.
Family Outdoor Adventure 1) Go on a hike with your family. (The dinosaur walk is a ½ mile walk through the woods) 2) Have a picnic with your family. (Dinosaur World will supply the picnic area) 3) Attend an outdoor event with your family. (Dinosaur World is an outdoor dinosaur museum). 4) Plan your outdoor family day. (Plan your trip at Dinosaur World and other tourist attractions in the Cave City area.
Build A Model 1) Build a model from a kit. (Dinosaur World has many types of dinosaur models. These can be purchased in the giftshop and assembled in the park).
2) Make a model of a mountain, a meadow, a canyon, or a river. (Scouts can make a model of the land dinosaurs roamed)
